Is freerealms really free?

i have a feeling the online game "freerealms" isnt free in a way. commercials that spout "free" every 3 seconds sounds suspicious. and you have to download it to play it. does it come with pop ups and all the like that makes you secretly pay for it? and if not is it even any good?
